![]() ![]() ![]() Starting on January 1 2019, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. Enjoy the games which doesn't work on W8 or W10 while you still can, because one day lord gaben will say that w7 is passe, and you will lose access to them. Not to mention that it's absolutely certain that one day it will be exactly the same with windows 7 support. Not very likely? Then how about "we're resigning from linux/macs support, too troublesome meh". "Oh, f**k this, we decided we hate microsoft - so from now we're permemently moving into linux and macs only, right now". Imagine yourself what it can lead to in the future. ![]() You had your XP only games on Steam - there they go, you can no longer play and they are permamently lost forever. Until now they were always telling you that your games (pardon me: licenses you bought) are yours to play till the end of time (or the end of Valve - whichever happens first). I'm not a lawyer, but isn't such behaviour called as a fraud?Īnd even if steam clear their store database, they will make a precedent. If steam stops XP support, then unless Valve carefully checks their databases and remove all such games from the store, they will be selling defected products which user will be unable to use under any circumstances. What meaningful legal problems that can arise are from state actor interests.įorget a frozen client, the best case scenario is they permanently allow old game licences to be transferred to GOG.įew thoughts: first, I think there is a quite a few games on steam which works only on XP/Vista systems. Even in case of class action lawsuits companies eventually settle with a fine and a small compensation for the affected parties, see PS3 and linux fiasco. I definitely don't have the cash, so that's irrelevant. It'd be cool if they froze a legacy client, but don't hold your breath, and don't think you'd have a legal case. I for one care exactly zilch about their development productivity because aside from their hosting and veri/vali I rarely use any - and rely on none - of their other "services". I don't, that's kinda why I framed it as a question. Legacy baggage has an immense cost on productivity, and all sorts of operational problems. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but you asking this question shows you probably don't have much real-world programming experience. ![]()
